Meet 14-year-old Sean Malone. He has an IQ above 200, a full-ride scholarship to one of the country’s top universities, and more than one million dollars from his winning streak on Jeopardy. However, Sean wishes he could just be normal.

But his life is anything but normal. The US government manipulates him, using him as a codebreaker in pursuit of a drug lord and killing innocent people along the way.

For reasons related to his personal security, Sean finds himself in Rome, building a new life under a new name, abandoning academics, and hiding his genius from everyone. When he’s 18 he falls in love. The thrills begin again when he learns that his girlfriend is critically ill and it’s up to him to use his intellect to find a cure, a battle pitting him against a multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical company and the demons of his past.

Elixir is a story about identity, secrets, and above all, love.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a book that was almost strictly an action/adventure/thriller type of novel, and I’m so glad to get back in the genre! Ted Galdi weaves a thrilling story of a boy genius who struggles with very real-life problems of love and growing up, but also deals with being, virtually, the smartest person on the planet.

I felt myself connecting to Sean and his different adventures, and as the story goes on and we slowly see Sean grow up, it’s an extremely enlightening experience to see his character grow and develop. He has other’s best interests at heart which makes him very real and life-like.

To a certain extent, the action sequences sort of reminded me of the movie/novel No Country For Old Men, in that there is a lot of cat and mouse going on, but it puts you on the edge of your seat and you become eager to find out what is going to happen next. And I really loved the ending and how everything was tied up so nicely.

I eagerly look forward to what Ted Galdi produces next, and hope that it is as action-packed and stimulating as Elixir was!
