Every weekend, in basements and parking lots across the country, young men with good white-collar jobs and absent fathers take off their shoes and shirts and fight each other barehanded for as long as they have to. Then they go back to those jobs with blackened eyes and loosened teeth and the sense that they can handle anything. Fight Club is the invention of Tyler Durden, projectionist, waiter and dark, anarchic genius. And it’s only the beginning of his plans for revenge on a world where cancer support groups have the corner on human warmth.

I originally had to watch the Fight Club movie for a Gender and Women’s Studies class I was taking, and had to write an essay on whether or not I thought there were homoerotic tendencies throughout the film. So, yes I did watch the film first, but I loved it so much that afterwards I just HAD to order the book. The movie is definitely tied for first as one of my all-time favorites and so is the book for that matter.

It’s written so exquisitely and I just loved the voice and tone throughout the whole thing. In this case I would actually recommend watching the movie first (if you hadn’t seen it before like me) because you can better imagine the way the book is written and how the story is being told to you.

That aside however, the book itself was amazing! I loved every second of it and could not put it down! It was so short but so perfect and encompassed so many different themes. It’s a gritty, dark, and dirty novel but something abut that made me love it even more. The afterword is also something that is totally worth the read too.

I can’t wait to pick up another one of Palahniuk’s novels and see how the rest of his writings are. I recommend Fight Club to pretty much everyone because it is simply so amazing.
