After a mysterious Sickness wipes out the rest of the population, the young survivors assemble into tightly run tribes. Jefferson, the reluctant leader of the Washington Square tribe, and Donna, the girl he’s secretly in love with, have carved out a precarious existence among the chaos. But when another tribe member discovers a clue that may hold the cure to the Sickness, five teens set out on a life-altering road trip to save humankind.

The tribe exchanges gunfire with enemy gangs, escapes cults and militias, braves the wilds of the subway and Central Park…and discovers truths they could never have imagined.

I don’t think the synopsis really does this book justice! It’s just so good! The first thought upon finishing it was “when is the next one coming out?” Too bad this one has another month to go before it’s even published. Darn.

Anyway, this was a thrill ride from start to finish. I don’t think I’ve ever read a novel that focuses on a post-apocalyptic world that takes place almost immediately after the apocalypse. I mean of course in other novels like Divergent and The Hunger Games we have years gone by and a more structured society set up. Here though, things are way more chaotic and run by teens! Which of course, sounds really awesome in hindsight but then you realize how disorderly and scary things can get, especially if someone leaves their home-base.

I really liked reading from Jefferson’s point of view. He remained level-headed and logical throughout the entire story unlike some of his other companions and I wasn’t a huge fan of Donna. She annoyed me a little bit, and their friendship was sort of weird. I expected her to be 100% kick ass, but she fell a little flat.

When this comes out I highly recommend that everyone pick it up though! If you like end of the world sort of stories than this is just the one for you!

Side note: This kind of reminded me faintly of Zoo by James Patterson
