New York City as you’ve never seen it before. A thousand-story tower stretching into the sky. A glittering vision of the future, where anything is possible—if you want it enough.

Welcome to Manhattan, 2118.

A hundred years in the future, New York is a city of innovation and dreams. But people never change: everyone here wants something…and everyone has something to lose.

Leda Cole’s flawless exterior belies a secret addiction—to a drug she never should have tried and a boy she never should have touched.

Eris Dodd-Radson’s beautiful, carefree life falls to pieces when a heartbreaking betrayal tears her family apart.

Rylin Myers’s job on one of the highest floors sweeps her into a world—and a romance—she never imagined…but will her new life cost Rylin her old one?

Watt Bakradi is a tech genius with a secret: he knows everything about everyone. But when he’s hired to spy by an upper-floor girl, he finds himself caught up in a complicated web of lies.

And living above everyone else on the thousandth floor is Avery Fuller, the girl genetically designed to be perfect. The girl who seems to have it all—yet is tormented by the one thing she can never have.

Debut author Katharine McGee has created a breathtakingly original series filled with high-tech luxury and futuristic glamour, where the impossible feels just within reach. But in this world, the higher you go, the farther there is to fall….

Have you ever read Gossip Girl, The Clique series, Pretty Little Liars (or anything by Sara Shepard) and enjoyed them? Well then you better pick this up ASAP because it’s got a little bit of each of those woven into the plot.

However, if you’re like me, and read those a long time ago but are now sick of them, I would stray away from this one. I think the plot has a good premise and the writing is good, but it just…fell flat (no pun intended).

There were times that I wanted to keep reading about certain characters and find out more about their backstories and plots, but then there were other characters (*cough* Atlas, Avery, Leda) that I absolutely could not stand and wanted to skip over their POV’s. But when you have a story switching between FIVE POV’s that all connect together, it’s nearly impossible to do that.

I actually found myself connecting more with the guys in this story than the girls since most of the girls were so fake and shallow. Which, I get it. That’s supposed to be the whole idea of the story since there is a literal hierarchy within the Tower, but it got old really quickly.

sleep-deprived

And the ending…it was really fast and I have no idea what is going on still with some of the characters (though, Goodreads informed me there’s going to be a sequel so I guess that should tie up some loose ends. I won’t be picking it up though. I don’t think I could sit through another 400 pages of people whining about not having enough money or the right designers to wear).

So, while I enjoyed McGee’s writing style, and the fast paced nature of some parts of the book, I couldn’t give this anything higher than 2 stars because of the blandness of the characters, the unresolved ending, and the overall length of the book.

  1. Reading the summary I was thinking, “YAS YAS THIS IS THE SORT OF BOOK I LOVE.” But that’s disappointing that the characters were bland and boring and things are left unresolved (which I cannnnoooot forgive). :c
Out of curiosity: What makes it science-fiction? Is it more the futuristic setting or are there some sci-fi themes?
Thank you for the review, Paige! I’ll probably take your word for it and give this book a miss.

    1. So I think that because it’s set 100+ years from now is what makes it futuristic. Within the story there’s some/a lot of the plot that revolves around the technology that they have/don’t have so that comes into play.
And you’re welcome! Maybe check it out from the library but I don’t think it’s worth the time to be honest 🙁

  2. I have an ARC for this one but I still haven’t read it. Based on the blurb, it sounds like something that I would want to read.. I’m not a fan of PLL, or Gossip Girl so now, I’m sure if I would even like this now… 🤔

  3. The hype over this book on Twitter is so real. I always come across the title of this book on my Twitter feed. But as I read your review, I have a feeling that I will not also like it.

  4. I actually love the PLL books–really anything by Shepard, so I think I’ll like this one! It’s tonight’s #BBTC so I’m excited to learn more about it and chat with the author!

  5. I read both the Gossip Girl and The Clique Series but right now, they’re not my type of read. It really sucks when you just can’t like a character!! I had those moments and whenever I read their POVs, I constantly check pages. ugh. This possibly might not be for me.
but….but I really like that cover!! just look at it!! it will look great in the shelf. ohwell… Great review, though 🙂

  6. I’m a huge fan of the Pretty Little Liars books, and I was really looking forward to reading this one, but after reading your review, I don’t know…bland and uninteresting characters can really ruin a book and make the entire thing just seem slow and boring. I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy this one more!
