“You go through life thinking there’s so much you need. . . . Until you leave with only your phone, your wallet, and a picture of your mother.”

Marin hasn’t spoken to anyone from her old life since the day she left everything behind. No one knows the truth about those final weeks. Not even her best friend Mabel. But even thousands of miles away from the California coast, at college in New York, Marin still feels the pull of the life and tragedy she’s tried to outrun. Now, months later, alone in an emptied dorm for winter break, Marin waits. Mabel is coming to visit and Marin will be forced to face everything that’s been left unsaid and finally confront the loneliness that has made a home in her heart.

Review

I’ve never read anything by Nina LaCour before. And I have no idea what I was waiting for. We Are Okay consumed me. It tore me up and haunted me. It’s just so…beautiful. So stunning. I breezed through this on two flights that I took in a weekend and I never wanted the story to end.

There’s just something so achingly real about Marin and her interactions that even I can’t put into words. She really embodies the human experience and what it’s like to have tragedy, death, isolation thrown your way in life.

And the writing itself? Utterly gorgeous. I mentioned in my Instagram post yesterday that this shot to the top of my favorite reads for the year and it’s true. I never wanted it to end. It’s been a long while since I’ve read a good book, much less one that left me thinking, pondering, and wondering about the characters, each time I put it down.

It’s definitely the book for winter that I wanted to read. Melodramatic and full of longing, but also makes you feel cozy and warm. I look forward to reading more of Nina LaCour’s work (as I bang my head against a wall for not doing so sooner).

Also, that cover? A+ material, right there.
