passage, n.
i. A brief section of music composed of a series of notes and flourishes.
ii. A journey by water; a voyage.
iii. The transition from one place to another, across space and time.

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them— whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home . . . forever.

I guess you could say that reading this book took me on a journey; (somewhat) literally and mentally. I read a good portion of this while I was flying back and forth from Colorado and California, but the different places the characters traveled also allowed me to be absorbed into their worlds.

I’ve never read a time travel novel before so this was super interesting to dive into. I was thoroughly confused by all the terminology at first, but once I started to really grasp what was going on, I fell into the story and began to enjoy it more.

I definitely liked the last half of the book much better than the first half. I flew through the last 200 pages which is where I think the most action happened and was what got me the most excited about the characters. The backstory and set up at the beginning was definitely necessary though, and leaving the story where it did (UGH CLIFF HANGERS), will lead to a really exciting sequel.

I also hope at some point maybe we can get a prequel about Etta’s mom Rose! She’s such an interesting character and I wanted to know more about her and pick her brain. Plus maybe a prequel about Nicholas’ early life? Can we just get a bunch of prequel novellas bound together? Please Alexandra Bracken?

Overall, an excellent time travel story with tons of adventure and action packed into the last half of the story. I’m SO stoked for the sequel (even though I may have to wait until 2017 *cries*)! And definitely stoked to meet Alexandra Bracken in a few weeks! I hope you all pick this up when it gets released in January!

  1. omg. how do you put texts beside the picture? 🙂

    1. If you align your picture to the left after you have put the text in I think that should slide it over next to it 🙂

  2. I’m so glad you liked it Paige! I have to read my copy like asap, and since the last time I read a time travel novel was ages ago, I’m really pumped to get into this. I hope that since the action is within the first 200 pages that I won’t become bored with the second half of the story!

I’ve been waiting to hear more on this book. I can’t wait to see how it is when I get around to reading it when it comes out. I’ve never read a time travel novel so I have no idea what to expect. I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it, lovely review! Have fun meeting Alexandra Bracken! c:

  5. I have to agree with you on everything about this book! By far one of my most favorite books possible of 2016! The journey itself was what did it for me. If it wasn’t for that I’m not sure I would’ve enjoyed it as much.

    1. I NEED a prequel so I can better understand some of the logistics of this series. I’m embarrassed by how lost I got sometimes!
